Sony officially closed the $3.6 billion deal and acquired Bungie, the developer behind successful titles such as Halo and Destiny. The Japanese tech and video games giant made an announcement back in January 2022, stating that they have agreed to acquire Bungie and the deal is now completely official.

Sony PlayStation’s official social media pages announced the happy news with the following message:

“The agreement to acquire Bungie has closed. So now we can officially say welcome to the PlayStation family.”

Bungie also shared a message confirming the acquisition’s completion:

“We are proud to officially join the incredible team at PlayStation, we are excited for the future of our company, and we are inspired to bring together players from all over the world to form lasting friendships and memories.”

Bungie’s CEO Pete Parsons said they will continue to publish games independently but will have the power of PlayStation with them now. Of course, things may change in the near future, but at least for the time being Sony has no plans to make Bungie games exclusive. In fact, PlayStation has been taking a different route bringing its exclusive hits to PC one after the other. The company expects to bring over $300 million in 2022 from PC games alone.

The company’s video game console PlayStation 5 is doing well despite the shortages, having sold over 20 million units so far. Sony says they’ll double the production numbers to combat the shortages and black market sellers.

Activision Blizzard’s acquisition by Microsoft remains pending

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is yet to pass the antitrust scrutiny, but Big Tech company doesn’t seem to b worried, and already making plans for the future.

Roughly a month ago, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer announced a new partnership with PlayStation legend Hideo Kojima on a new IP, and Microsoft‘s latest consoles Xbox Series X and S are doing way better than Xbox One ever did in Japan, a market where the company has been suffering for nearly a decade now.
