Career in Games #1: Alternative careers in the game industry

At our Mobidictum Career in Games event, we discussed many issues related to the industry. Volkan Bozkaya and Sinem Kaya from Digi Game shared alternative career options in the game industry apart from software and design at our event.

As Mobidictum, we held our first Career in Games event! In our event, we hosted very valuable names and discussed many issues related to the sector. In the event where our valuable guests were present, we hosted Volkan Bozkaya and Sinem Kaya from Digi Game with the subject of “Should I write a code or do marketing?”

Volkan Bozkaya worked as a Product Manager in different sectors for about seven years. He has been working as a Senior Business Development Manager at Digi Game for the last six months.

Sinem Kaya is a name who has been a content and news writer in the game industry for a long time. Kaya, who started to develop his career with the experience of the content he produces in the game industry and the news he follows, is currently working as a Community Manager at Digi Game.

Alternative careers other than being a software developer or designer in the gaming industry

When it comes to careers in the gaming industry, the first thing that comes to our minds is software and design. On the other hand, the multidisciplinary structure of the gaming industry offers opportunities to talented people who have expertise in different fields. Our guests talk about alternative careers in the game industry for those not software developers or designers.

Volkan Bozkaya, who is currently pursuing a successful career in the game industry, starts his presentation with the following sentences:

“Actually, I’m not a game developer or game designer either. I will talk about this a little bit to guide those who want to be like me and enter the gaming industry.”

Volkan Bozkaya met with the game industry by applying for a job posting from a game company he saw on the billboard on his way to his previous job. Despite receiving a negative result from this application, the growing structure of the gaming industry attracts his attention, and he decides that he wants to take part in this industry. He applies for various jobs and gets negative results from many of them. Although the reason for each negative result is different, Bozkaya continues his consistent research and effort. Our speaker describes what he learned during this process as follows:

“During this period, I was doing research and I also realized that I was doing these researches well. Afterwards, I realized an another important point: I needed to add value to the industry. I wasn’t doing software or design, but how else could I add value to the industry? I had to think about it. ”

Meanwhile, Bozkaya, who is continuing his Master of Business Administration (MBA) education at the university, learns that there is a Game Design department at his university. At the end of the process, he writes her master’s thesis on hyper-casual games. Our speaker says the following on the subject:

“I entered the industry after a period of about 2 years, by doing a lot of research and thinking what value I could add. I am currently working at Digi Game. Here, I’m interested in everything but the software and design made by the game studios we partner with.”

Based on his experiences, Bozkaya lists the careers in the game industry, which are not related to software and design, as follows:

  • Digital marketing
  • Community Management
  • Operations Management
  • Social Media Management
  • Content Writing
  • Quality Control
  • Localization
  • Data Analysis
  • Level Design
  • Video Content Production
  • Game Script Writing
  • Business Management
  • Project Management
  • Interface Design
  • Human Resources
  • Law

As you can see, there are many career fields in the gaming industry. Apart from software and design related to game development, there are many areas such as examining game data, project management, game marketing, and managing legal processes. In fact, when viewed from here, software and design in the game industry does not seem to occupy as much space as it looks.

Regarding the subject, Bozkaya states the following:

“Actually, whatever you have an interest and expertise in, I think you can definitely connect that expertise with a game-related topic. On the other hand, there are parts of the job that are not related to the game. For example, setting up a game studio has legal parts, financial parts, human resources, and project management. There are also indispensable issues that are not directly related to the game.”

In response to the question “How can non-programmers or non-designers enter the game industry” our speaker offers the following suggestions:

“If you are at the beginning of the road and you do not have a specialization in software or design, you need to do a lot of research first. Think about what value you can add to the gaming industry and try to add value. At the same time, reach out to people and show them what you’ve done because if you don’t, they’ll always be yours.”

In which areas are people needed to work in the gaming industry?

Volkan Bozkaya talked about his career in the game industry. But what is needed in the gaming industry? In which fields is it easier to find a job? Another guest of ours, Sinem Kaya, discusses this issue.

Digi Game company approaches the game development business from a different perspective. The company provides services, so that game studios do not deal with other works other than game development. As a requirement of this, people who are not software developers or designers also work within Digi Game, and these people provide services in many other fields. Sinem Kaya explains the subject as follows:

“Game development studios do game designs and development on the one hand and deal with a lot of trouble in the process. At this point, we are trying to guide developers who have no previous experience with incorporation. We enable you to establish relationships with investors and receive assistance in the fields of finance, law, and marketing. ”

Incorporation is a process that includes many legal transactions. In addition to game development, studios that want to turn their games into profitable businesses need to be incorporated. At this point, they face many difficulties. Or studios that want to market the game they have already developed need to get help in the field of marketing. In such cases, people who are not programmers or designers come into play. In short, the game industry needs a lawyer or a marketer in such cases. On the other hand, it is possible to expand these examples. For example, having a historian at the company that makes a medieval-themed game might work, or a successful musician might enter the gaming industry to compose soundtracks.

Digi Game is engaged in valuable activities in the game industry. They add value to the industry with the events they organize and the courses they offer. They also organize competitions such as Next Tale to reveal the talents the industry needs.

Sinem Kaya states that the number of people who will work in the game industry on the management, content, and marketing side is too low to meet the industry’s needs. People with expertise in these fields are highly needed in the sector. Regarding the subject, Kaya states the following:

“You do not necessarily have to have studied these departments at university specifically. Of course, if you have experience in these areas, you are in an advantageous position. We need people in management systems, people in marketing, people working in the legal field, and even people in the educational sciences.”

Marketing is one of the important issues that studios that want to make money from games as a business model should pay attention to. No matter how good the game is, we see that sometimes it doesn’t get to the point it deserves. At this point, Sinem Kaya uses the following expressions to emphasize the importance of marketing:

“There is no good or bad game. There are games that are well marketed and badly marketed. That’s why we want to focus a little more on the marketing, sales, and management part of the game to help game developers. We need a lot of people in this field.”

Kaya advises people who want to be involved in this part of the gaming industry to be interested in gaming media. Closely following social media and game platforms will provide experience and knowledge to those working in this field. It should not be forgotten that the game culture, a hobby in our lives, can be a career door.

Digi Game is always open to new talents and experts. When the gaming industry is prevalent, career opportunities will continue to exist in this period.
