Facebook received a lot of criticism after the name change decision

Recently, Facebook CEO Zuckerberg announced that his company will change its name to “Meta”. After the decision, Zuckerberg faced a lot of criticism, some of which was rather strange.
Facebook's new name is Meta.
Facebook’s new name announcement caused controversy in the technology community.

Facebook CEO Zuckerberg announced that he will change the name of his company in an online event via Facebook Connect. Facebook has recently come to the fore with its investment and work for the metaverse. For those familiar with the industry, the new name Facebook chose was not surprising.

After the name change announcement, there were many comments on the subject on social media and in the industry. While some of the comments were good, the majority subjected Facebook to heavy criticism. Some of these criticisms were quite rude and vulgar. Seamus Blackley, one of the important names of Xbox, tweeted “Here is a schematic representation of my testicles” talking about the logo of the company, which will be renamed Meta. It will have received quite a reaction that; He removed this tweet from his official Twitter account.

Most of the negative reviews seem to come from people who think the metaverse isn’t the topic of the day. At least when it comes to Facebook, people say the company has a number of issues to focus on before the metaverse. There are also those who accuse Facebook of putting its earnings ahead of social and human values. While this and many similar negative criticisms were directed at the company, Zuckerberg stated at the previous press conference that he was aware that he would be the subject of these criticisms:

“I just want to acknowledge that I get that probably there are a bunch of people will say that this isn’t a time to focus on the future. And I want to acknowledge that there are clearly important issues to work on in the present. And we’re committed to continuing to do that and continuing the massive industry-leading effort that we have on that. At the same time, I think there will always be issues in the present. So I think it’s still important to push forward and continue trying to create what the future is.”

Negative criticism aside, there are those who consider it a revolutionary effort. Some technology writers predict that the investments and studies will definitely yield results. Metaverse, which is already a utopia for science fiction lovers, also attracts great attention from technology fans. It must be admitted that the metaverse is a concept that has the potential to be the world of the future. While Zuckerberg’s work on the subject is a mockery for some, it promises utopias for others. One group describes the move as a step “before the company split”, while the other group calls it “leading technology.”

The money Facebook spends on augmented reality (XR) and metaverse work are huge. It is a matter of curiosity how the investments, which are many times larger than the total capital of many companies, will yield results. Trying to take the social media network “beyond the realism”, Facebook seems to have already set out to start a new era.

As a side note, author Neal Stephenson, who first used the term metaverse in his 1992 book “Snow Crash,” declared that he was irrelevant. The science fiction writer made the following statement regarding the questions posed to him:

Metaverse first appeared in 1992.
Neal Stephenson, the inventor of the term Metaverse, stated that the company has nothing to do with their projects.

“Since there seems to be growing confusion on this: I have nothing to do with anything that FB is up to involving the Metaverse, other than the obvious fact that they’re using a term I coined in Snow Crash. There has been zero communication between me and FB & no biz relationship.”
