Swiss video game developer and publisher FunPlus is expanding its reach in the mobile gaming space. The independent game maker said they decided to launch a new mobile game development studio in Barcelona, where the firm’s Western publishing arm already exists. FunPlus believes Barcelona will become the next hub of tech and gaming, hence they’re investing in the city and its talent pool further.

The gaming company promoted its former Director of Product Development Felipe Mata as VP of Product for the new studio and added Jacob Krüger (an industry veteran who worked for Miniclip, Scopely, and Social Point in the past) as its Director of User Acquisition.

Enric Cabestany, VP of Europe & LATAM at FunPlus said Barcelona houses amazing talents in the mobile and video game space, and commented with the following bit:

“This is just the first step in a very exciting journey that will allow us to grow as a team, recruit for key roles and find new opportunities to perform strongly and make Barcelona shine in the coming years.”

The gaming entity will work closely with the local government, in order to leverage the city’s talent and help improve the gaming market in it. The Swiss gaming company will also launch its first “Career Starter” event in Barcelona and will provide opportunities for students and interns to get their first job experiences in the video gaming sector.

FunPlus’ first office in Barcelona was launched in 2019 and it’s been growing steadily since then. The company also made decent connections with local studios and gaming organizations, including DeviCAT, the Catalan video game association.

DeviCAT’s Secretary General Iván Fernández welcomed this new investment with the following words:

“Video games are one of the sectors with the greatest potential in and for Catalonia, especially with regard to the creation of youthful and qualified employment. Thanks to the drive of Catalan companies, our country has become the most attractive specialized talent hub for a sector with unstoppable growth. The ambition of our partner FunPlus to grow its presence here is another strong example of this.

FunPlus’ most eye-catching game is State of Survival, a free-to-play strategy game that surpassed 150 million downloads in three years. It’s available on both Android and iOS devices. The company’s other known and successful titles are King of Avalon and Guns of Glory, which are celebrating their three-year and five-year anniversaries, respectively.
