One of the top-grossing mobile games, Genshin Impact continues to generate impressive revenue from its massive user base. After the recent release of version 2.1 of the game, player spending exploded and reached new record highs.
According to data provided by MejoresApuestas, in the first seven days of September after the release of version 2.1, mobile Genshin Impact players spent more than $151 million on in-app purchases over the entire month of August.
Over 70 million downloads in less than a year
Chinese video game publisher MiHoYo has been putting a lot of emphasis on live operations since Genshin Impact’s release in September 2020, regularly adding new content and characters to the game to keep players engaged.
Version 2.1, known as Floating World Under the Moonlight, revealed new characters like Raiden Shogun and Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn, free for PlayStation. The latest update also allowed players to explore never-before-seen islands and a new weapon event and fishing system. Innovations like these have resulted in an increase in the number of Genshin Impact players.
AppMagic data showed that MiHoYo’s action role-playing game has been downloaded approximately 4.5 million times each month since its release, the record month to date excluding October 2020, with total downloads reaching 70 million in August this year.
In addition, according to AirNow data, the anime-style action RPG app has approximately 4.5 million monthly active users, with more than half of them using the iOS version of the game.
Total revenue reached $922 million
In less than a year since its release, Genshin Impact has become the #2 revenue-generating mobile game worldwide, following Tencent’s PUBG Mobile and topping hits like Pokémon GO and Roblox.
In the first nine months of the year, the action role-playing game grossed $923 million worldwide, $10 million more than Tencent’s Honor of Kings, and $200 million more than Roblox or Pokémon GO.
Also, in March 2021, Genshin Impact became the fastest mobile gaming app to generate $1 billion in player spend worldwide. The RPG game has reached this major milestone just six months after its initial launch. The second-fastest app with $1 billion in player spending was Pokémon GO within nine months of its release.
