Google announced that Android games and applications will be available on Windows devices in 2022.

Google plans to bring Android games to Windows PCs next year. A new app from Google will make Google Play games run on Windows tablets and PCs and it will be available in 2022.

Greg Hartrell, Google’s Product Director responsible for Android and Google games, made the following statements:

“Starting in 2022, players will be able to experience their favorite Google Play games on more devices: seamlessly switching between a phone, tablet, Chromebook, and soon, Windows PCs. This Google-built product brings the best of Google Play Games to more laptops and desktops, and we are thrilled to expand our platform for players to enjoy their favorite Android games even more.”

Google states that it has not made any partnerships with Microsoft, BlueStacks, or others in creating this app. The app will also allow gamers to continue their game on a desktop computer after playing on a phone, tablet, or Chromebook.

During The Game Awards, Google said it would launch the app next year. It’s not yet clear what technology Google uses to run Android apps on Windows, but the games will run locally, not cloud.

Google’s app will not rely on any unique integration with Windows 11. The company will distribute the application itself.

Google’s announcement came months after Microsoft had begun testing Android apps on Windows 11 PCs. Currently, Microsoft is building an Android-based system that can run Android apps from various sources. The software giant partnered with Amazon to allow Windows users to install games and apps locally from the Amazon Appstore. Still, Microsoft will not officially provide any Google Play support.

Since Microsoft officially only partners with Amazon for this feature, many Android games, and apps that Windows 11 users can install will be relatively few. Companies such as Google and BlueStacks seem to fill this gap.

While Microsoft and Google are trying to bring Android apps and games to Windows, BlueStacks goes one step further, bringing Android games to web browsers. BlueStacks X will let you play Android games for free in your browser.
