Loot boxes in Diablo 4 won’t give players unfair advantages says Blizzard

Diablo 4 won’t be like Diablo Immortal, meaning it won’t be a pay-to-win title.

Blizzard shared a very long blog post ensuring fans that neither loot boxes nor the premium battlepasses in Diablo 4 will empower players in an unfair way. Blizzard said Diablo 4 will be a full-price game and the game’s store will only feature cosmetics; no pay-to-win items.

Kegan Clark, the person behind the quarterly blog post, said none of the items in the shop will provide any “pay-for-power options”. The game will have “Seasons” and include “all-new gameplay, quests, challenges, meta changes, and quality-of-life improvements” according to the post. Clark said even the rewards will be cosmetic-centric and won’t give any unfair advantages to players.

There will be live events of different kinds offering players “new adventures and unique rewards” to players. The blog post also mentions the following bit:

“Cosmetics give players even more options to customise the visual appearance of their characters. Nothing offered in the Shop grants a direct or indirect gameplay advantage. So, while many of these may look like powerful pieces of gear, they have no in-game stats.”

Diablo fans have been skeptical about what to expect from the upcoming title, especially given how Diablo Immortal is a pay-to-win game and has been heavily criticized due to its monetization model. Having said that, Diablo Immortal did quite well, both in regards to the number of downloads and lifetime revenue so far.

Following Diablo Immortal’s China launch, both numbers saw a drastic increase, and the Diablo Immortal made its way back to the App Store’s Top 10 revenue chart for July 2022.
