Sony’s goals for the near future apparently include boosting the number of PSVR2 headsets until March 2023. The tech giant plans to produce 2 million PSVR2 headsets in six months. The company’s previous VR headset reached 2 million in sales over a year after its launch.

Sony had a difficult time with PS5 after the global semiconductor shortage, and some parts are still not that easy to find. Reportedly, Sony had been manufacturing the PSVR2 for the past month without encountering any problems with part shortages, so the decision to increase product count seems viable for now.

The Japanese tech giant has been actively working to promote the new VR headset. Several PSVR2 games have been announced on the last two episodes of State of Play, including support for Resident Evil Village.

A PlayStation Blog podcast featuring Hideaki Nishino, SVP of Platform Experience in Sony, also contained valuable information about the improvements and upcoming games for the PSVR2. In the same show, Nishino confirmed that PSVR2 will not be backward compatible with its predecessor, PSVR.

The news came from Bloomberg, stating that with this move, the company is “Setting an ambitious outlook that defies the global economic malaise.” The report also mentions that a Sony representative did not agree to a request for comment.

The new VR headset is set to launch in early 2023. The exact date for the launch and the price of the PSVR2 is currently unknown, although it is now public knowledge that Horizon: Call of the Mountain will be the first game in the headset’s library. Since the headset will require a PlayStation 5 to work, Sony believes the launch will also increase sales for the console.
