Spire Animation Studios aims to create new kinds of animated films with metaverse potential. The studio also plans to design immersive worlds for interactive platforms. They want to build on their existing stories and allow users to authentically engage.

The animation studio raised $20 million in funding earlier this year, which was led by Epic Games and joined by Connect Ventures. The latter was formed by New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in an effort to invest in seed, startup, series A, and early-stage companies.

Spire CEO P.J. Gunsagar shared a statement about the new funding they have received and shared his excitement with the following words:

“Adding Temasek to our existing set of outstanding partners — Epic Games, CAA, and NEA — will help us realize our vision of bridging feature-quality linear and non-linear animated content. A cornerstone of this new model is Meta-Distribution, which empowers audiences to interact with characters and stories of our movies before, during and after release. We couldn’t be more excited about this potential.”

The first project will be Spire’s animated movie Trouble. The studio will collaborate with Danny McBride’s Rough House Pictures, and the movie is expected to be released in 2024.

Spire Animation Studios’ total investment reached over $40 million after this funding round. The studio’s collaboration with Epic Games allows Spire to have full access to Unreal Engine, Epic’s game-making software. The partnership with Epic also helps Spire to produce high-quality animated visual content and simultaneously build out worlds and experiences for the metaverse.

Spire Animation Studios is co-founded by Brad Lewis (Ratatouille; How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World) and industry entrepreneur P.J. Gunsagar. Currently, more than 90 people are working for the company to create animated feature films with metaverse potential.
