Embracer Group, the owner of both development companies, had recently hinted at an incoming shift of this sort. Embracer had recently announced the acquisition of the IP rights to The Lord Of The Rings. Around that time, the company released this statement in its financial report:

“One of the Group’s AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group. This was done to ensure the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title.”

The game was planned to be a major PS5 exclusive and holds much interest for huge parties such as Sony and Disney. Bloomberg reports that the two behemoth companies were not pleased with the game’s progress after Aspyr presented an internal demo. Companies have concluded that the game needs an upgrade in quality, and Embracer made the decision to shift developers accordingly.

The Aspyr team worked on the remake for the past two and a half years and finally announced the game in the second half of 2021. Aspyr placed the project on hold about a month ago in an attempt to decide what to do next. Fans were disappointed as rumors were boiling that the project might be dead.

The original game was a huge hit when it was first released in 2003 and has gained a lot of diehard fans. The community positively acclaimed the news of a studio shift as Saber Interactive will continue working on the remake of a true fan favorite game.

Embracer stated that it is not “expecting any material delays” from the transition, but the report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says otherwise. According to Schreier, the game is at least two years away from completion. Since the game didn’t have a specified release date, any material delays that might come to fruition will happen without the knowledge of the game community.
