The Finnish gaming industry achieved a turnover of over two billion euros in 2020, an increase of nine percent compared to the previous year.
46 of Finland’s 200 game studios have already achieved a turnover of over one million euros
We see that the pandemic, which caused many industries to be stunned last year, has not yet affected the financial performance of the gaming industry. Of course, the gaming industry has also suffered a little from the pandemic. As an example, we can say that working remotely was difficult, but the negative impact of the pandemic in the gaming industry was mostly indirect and did not harm the industry in the long run. On the other hand, the restrictions and quarantine processes that took place during the pandemic significantly increased the consumption of digital content.
The Finnish gaming industry was able to properly manage all these needs and challenges. The Finnish gaming industry has grown significantly, and by the end of 2020, 46 of Finland’s 200 game studios have already achieved a turnover of over one million euros. This is 12 more studios than 2018, the review year of the previous report.
The Finnish gaming industry employed a total of 3,600 people in 2020. 28 percent of them were foreigners and 22 percent were women. In addition, over an average period of one year, the gaming industry is expected to need between 400 and 1,000 new employees. Many game studios increasingly need a diverse workforce of creative artists.
100 new Finnish games released in 2020
Continuing challenges in the games industry throughout 2020, a shortage of skilled labor in both creative work and business development, and the challenges of working remotely have resulted in delays and difficulties in completing game developments. Despite all this, around 100 new Finnish games were released in 2020. In addition, the total turnover of the Finnish gaming industry has stabilized at over two billion euros in recent years.
Globally, the gaming industry will continue to evolve rapidly. Finland, which is still a very attractive center for the game industry worldwide, will maintain the importance of the game industry’s contribution to the country’s economy through taxation in 2021. In addition, it should be noted that the success of the Finnish game industry is managed by mobile game studios such as Rovio, Supercell, Seriously, Nitro Games, Frogmind Games.
